Okay, I know some of you have been waiting for them…these patterned, palazzo pants, Vogue pattern V2958. And I’m sorry it took so long, but it was a challenge finding just the right fabric. When I finally bumped into this swishy rayon…well, I kinda flipped for it. So much so, that I bought enough fabric to make a top to go with. At the same time, I was keen to step up my pattern/colour game. This is Oona inspired after all. And. Yes. This fuchsia print had me at hello. I bought .6m with the intention of adding it as a fun accent at the neckline or waistband, but I tell ya, that Michael Miller pink plain wiggled it’s way into an entire top. It just had to be. I pretty much held my breath while laying out pattern pieces on my precious and tiny piece of fabric. That top pattern, New Look 6799 by the way, is simply the bodice of my Paris In The Springtime Dress, lengthened a little, with the zip moved to the side seam. And, um…I added the length mid-bodice which was totally dumb; it messed up the dart positioning…duh…resulting in a bit of an old lady boob thing going on…but I’m willing to overlook that, and I sincerely hope you will too! At the end of the day, I quite love these pants; they might be the most comfortable I’ve ever worn…and…as long as I’m not catching my reflection in a store window…I have to say, I’m totally down with the top too.
All righty, that’s all she wrote for today. Want more colour and pattern? Check out the many Oona inspired outfits on Sewcialist’s Flickr Group.
And! I’m excited to be linking up with Patti for Visible Monday over at Not Dead Yet Style.

Love your outfit Sue esp the pants. Every time I visit your blog you inspire me to learn how to sew. One of these day I am gojng to buy myself a sewing machine. One has to start somewhere. A great weekend to you. xoxo
Dana Bishop says
OK next time you go to Peace Arch, call me! I will zoom up. I want to get on your list of international friends!
Love, love, love your pants. Fabric extraordinaire! You did an awesome job. Your photographic skill blows me away. I have to admit I'm jealous 🙂
You look positively radiant ! We are all sun drenched up here. Hugs!
Sheila says
The top is amazing, but the pants are stellar! You've inspired me to wear my palazzos this weekend! I love the toenails too – must try that when not feeling uber-lazy. Come visit me if you're over on Vanc. Island!! I'm in Victoria!
Michelle says
These are GORGEOUS! I really love the use of bold print on a palazzo pant! I think yours, in particular, are splendid.
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Thanks Elsie! If you get the sewing bug, you won't regret it. It would be nice if you could borrow a machine from a friend before committing to owning your own, although you can find some great little sewing machines second hand. Good Luck!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
You ARE on my list of international friends! And one day we will meet! Real brick and mortar, or gardens as we might prefer.
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Thanks Sheila!! You are so on my list…no one knows thrift shopping in Victoria like you do! Soon!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Thank you so much Michelle! I think we both may be channeling Hawaii and Aloha with our posts!
M @ My Closet Catalogue says
The old woman boob thing is forgiven – if not totally overlooked, had you not said anything – because that print is the cat's meow! And your palazzo pants were worth the wait. Once again, I covet your entire outfit and rue the day that I can't sew; or at least live closer to you so I can commission you to make some things for me (I've been on a Mad Hunt for a toile circle skirt with pockets on eBay and can't find any ready made but have found tons of auctions for fabric. Argh!)
Suzanne Carillo Style Files says
Oh my! This is like a big slap of colour and fun up side the head : )
They turned out fantastic. The fabric is ideal. You chose so well. And I love the mixing of the pattern with the top you chose. So eclectic. Right up my alley.
Great job. I am so jealous of your wicked sewing skills. I can't wait to see if you do decide to make a top that matches the bottoms so it'll look like a jumpsuit.
Lovely photos too BTW. Kudos to your cameraman : )
bisous
Suzanne
Vix says
I love this outfit, that fabric was crying out to be made into big, jazzy pants and looks wonderful with the Paris top. You looks so good I didn't see any weird boob issues, just a woman who looks amazing. xxx
Heather says
Oh my goodness! I love the whole outfit and I love these two fabrics paired together. Awesome!!
Joni James says
You are quite the seamstress! Your toes are incredibly cute too.
I'll be traveling right through that portal in just a few weeks! It's such a pretty park.

pastcaring says
Cousin Sue, we are in sync! I just bought some patterned palazzo pants today in a charity shop, although they aren't quite as fabulous as yours! (And of course I didn't make mine…) I just adore that fabric, and yes yes yes, make a matching top; as Suzanne says, it will look like a jumpsuit for even more gorgeousness!
Love the pink print top too, and I hadn't even noticed any boob weirdness!
As always, your photos are a joy. xxx
Natalia Lialina says
You are one fun lady, Sue! You look absolutely INCREDIBLE in your palazzo pants and all these amazing bracelets, head to toe (literally!) beautiful and joyful!
Melanie says
Wow, maybe if I try the old lady boob thing it will look like I have boobs. Ha!
Your posts are always so fun, Sue. Great colour, writing, talent. Yes, palazzo pants are not to be scoffed at and these are so supremely unscoffworthy. They are incredible, and the top with them is inspired. I'm glad you could get away for a trip abroad.
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Haha! Give it a go and let us all know your results! Yes, my trip abroad…after tea and before dinner. First time I needed to carry my passport for outfit photos, LOL.
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Natalia! Thank you so much for popping in to comment! You, with the always amazing colour schemes, including polished digits!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Again! It can't be coincidence. It's in the genes, I say! Matching top coming up…
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Thank you Flo! Lovely of you to take the time to comment. I appreciate that knowing that your home is keeping you quite occupied right now!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Ooooh, YOU always looking so pretty in your photos! I hope you've been enjoying a lovely Maritime summer…a part of Canada I so want to visit!!!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
…well, it could very well happen…Mood, and 'the others'….those fantastic notions stores…they are calling my name.
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Oh! And thank you so much for the compliment!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Hahaha….that's funny, but it does seem a bit like a portal, doesn't it. Enjoy your time in Canada, eh?
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Thanks Heather! The two fabrics, so far apart in the store, really are a non-matchy match aren't they!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Squeee! Vix! We all know you've got 'IT', and your stamp of approval has me blushing!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Hey BBFF…Totally! Yep, after seeing your Anthro jumpsuit, I am totally doing the top too!
Yeah, the photos…no problem whatsoever. Just need that elusive ten minutes of perfect light, LOL.
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
I'm itching now to cruise for toile fabric. And a circle skirt in toile sounds heavenly. There is a pinky-hued toile at retail fabric stores that I kinda, totally love right now. Sheesh, if we lived closer Maricel, we'd really get each other into trouble. 🙂
Nicole says
I LOVE this combination–it's just so happy! Beautiful job! Both pieces fit you beautifully!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Hey Nicole! Thanks so much! Once I get a good fit, I want to make the same pattern over and over again.

I always think, if you know I am honest because I do not agree with everything, then you can appreciate a compliment even more. And it is impossible to please everyone all of the time. We are all different.

Hi Sue, I wanted to come back and thank you for your comment on my recent post! I asked a question about the creative process and I just wanted to mention that you know, sometimes the ideas hit all at once, and other times they trickle out and it seems like long years between inspirations. I've had many down times feeling lost and completely uncreative. Most recently though the pillow slip covers idea came suddenly. The whole screen printing process came on a suggestion to make t shirts which turned out not good, but eventually it led me to here.
I read on your blog that you paint on canvas! Maybe since you love sewing and painting you can combine those two things and there's your missing piece? I've heard you can water down acrylic paint and use it on fabric. You could make some beautiful fabric with swishes of color!! I'd love to see it!
Ariane Lasalle says
Hi Sue!
Love the pants, love the top and love the location –
I love how you mixed it all
Yep got the sewing bug as well, my project are pretty simple but it's a start
I enroll into a sewing class this fall and i will learn how to use a serger and i have a couple of projects in mind –
Take care big hugs
Arianexo
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Ariane! That is so smart to be taking a sewing class! I find hands on learning can be so helpful! And simple isn't bad as you know! It can be the very best kind of sewing, allowing a brilliant fabric choice to stand out!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Thanks so much for your insights Joni! You've reassured me that there isn't a 'wrong' path…that it can, in fact, be many paths traveled before we get to what seems like an 'ah ha' moment. It's a very good reminder to trust the creative process; and to really believe that the medium that we are presently drawn to is exactly where/how we should be playing. Yes, I do paint on canvas, and I have done a little artistry on two pairs of thrifted jeans. Now, you've got my brain swirling with ideas of painting actual canvas/cotton yardage and then creating a garment!!! That could be rather brilliant! Squeee!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Louise!!! I was just thinking about you…kismet that you stopped by and said hello! Thanks so much!
