Hey you! Me again, with a brief fill in on summer’s ups. The mister and I enjoyed a little getaway to Whistler where we did lots of hiking and swimming. I sometimes wonder if the only reason we do massive amounts of moderate activity is because we enjoy PUREBREAD so dang much. Here at home, I’ve been enjoying lounging in our little garden. My flowers are putting on a brilliant show and they’ve lured in so many hummingbirds and bees and butterflies. It’s heavenly! And indoors…I gave my kitchen a little makeover…just painting and decorating..and I sewed new window valances too. One of the perks of renting is that any of the big stuff that may need doing is left to the landlord. It’s all very light and airy now, and…after all the cleaning I’ve done…I’ve decided there is to be absolutely no cooking allowed. ever.
Things have been less busy on the sewing front. I feel pretty much complete as far as summer sewing goes…although I am still on the lookout for fabric for a jumpsuit. What I have in mind fabric wise, will transition beautifully into autumn, so the hunt continues. I’m starting to think ahead to cooler, and wetter, weather. Yep. I’m dreaming about jackets and coats. Coats are probably my favourite fall/winter garment to sew. But. We’re not there yet. Today it’s all about my Bowl of Cherries Dress, sewn back in July. It’s been getting so much wear, I was beginning to wonder if it would ever stand still long enough to be snapped for the blog. There’s not much new to say about this make…TNT Simplicity 2339 made into a dress with altered collar and facing. The biggie news for me is the skirt silhouette. Looky dat! No gathers or pleats! I hemmed and hawed over making an A-Line version for quite some time. I’m all about the fit and flare silhouette…or so I thought. It was actually at the mister’s insistence, that I surrendered and gave it a go. I don’t know if he’s developed a keen sense of style or if he was just tired of my ‘Whatcha think…dis…dat…should I…could I?’ rambles. Either way….this is one easy dress to wear and I love it. Even though it’s 100% cotton {Mary Englebreit design}, it’s way less wrinkly than any of my gathered or pleated skirts! Especially on the sit side.
And…as you can see…my Bowl of Cherries Dress has been Spy Girled. I’ve had the thrill before…here and here…and it never gets old. Thanks Anne, for giving me the gams I wish I was born with! Anne’s 52 Pick-me-up: Cherry/Acceptance is going on this week, and I’m joining in…well you know…wearing bowls of cherries and all.

Last, but not least, I made a floral hatband. I love Mary Engelbreit’s whimsical artwork, and a whimsical straw hat feels like the right go-with. I followed Suzanne Carillo’s DIY FLORAL HAT tutorial. Easy-peasy and oh so much fun to do! Thanks bunches Suzanne! I can see myself making more of these. FYI people…the flowers are attached to my DIY HATBAND and not to the hat itself. So many possibilities!

All righty! Have a lovely one peeps!

ow, would love a bowl of cherries at the moment 🙂 shirdresses are really my kind of dress and yours is a lovely dress but the hat is tottaly geting my atention here, have not thought of doing that, it gives you so many options and looks.

  • Reply Melanie August 24, 2015 at 3:20 pm

Sue, you are like Sue of Red Gables here, the West Coast version, and way better. I love that cherry dress and the fact that you were Spy Girled (Anne is so talented!). These are great photos and the hat brings the look right to the very top of fabulous. You have been industrious and cheers for a bright airy kitchen and deli food, or partners who cook, and Pure Breads. There's a Breka near my home which is a daily torment. I devoured a Long John today. Carry on!

  • Reply Suzanne Carillo August 24, 2015 at 4:16 pm

Wohoo! I'm glad I inspired you to make that super cute hat. I too love the idea of the changeable hat band. I'm sure yours has some elastic in it. I couldn't be bothered. Now you can make different headbands for every dress! LOL Too much?

You know I love that dress and the print. It suits you to a tee. Optimistic : )

I clicked on that link and my stomach started growling. YUM!!! I need to start on supper I think.

you have been Spy-Girled again! what an honor, and well-deserved. This dress is lovely. xox

  • Reply Flo August 24, 2015 at 5:01 pm

So cute, I love both the hat and the dress. Mary Englebreit designs are so fun, I recognized that immediately. I will have to look at those hat band instructions, I have a doll hat that I'm not happy with and I'm sure I can alter it to fit.

I'm right there with you Ida! Just a warning: DIY floral hatbands could be addictive, LOL!

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas August 24, 2015 at 5:36 pm

LOL…I'm so close what with the barn and all. I haven't had a Long John since I don't know when. I guess because my taste buds are so sophisticated now…hahaha.

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas August 24, 2015 at 5:38 pm

Thanks again Suzanne! Your DIY really is fantastic! And come thunk me over the head if I start doing matchy headbands for every dress. Believe it or not, but I'm trying to dial down the cuteness! I want more classic in my classic with a twist.

Thank you Patti! Being Spy Girled really is the coolest honor!

I've noticed lots of us aren't sewing quite as much right at the moment! I'm right with you on no cooking ever. Who needs the workload? Kitchens Are for decoration, anyways. Love your dress, and I love the shape too! An a-line or a flare seems to stay in style, so good to have both. Cute pics!!

  • Reply Connie August 24, 2015 at 7:08 pm

Isn't it just great when you make yourself a dress that is just perfecto? So adorable and the hat is perfect. Oooooo I can't wait to see your jumpsuit. I'm planning on making one for Fall, too, but I'm still hunting for a pattern. Congrats on your immortalization a la Anne.

  • Reply josep-maria badia August 24, 2015 at 11:32 pm

A beautifully dressed and very nice and fun look with the hat. The print is cute, and the pattern is fantastic, I love the volume and movement of the skirt. I really like these blouses, so basic and simple dresses. They are very elegant and feminine.

You may have given up pleats and gathers but I'm relieved to see pockets. 😀

Being Spy Girled is such a rush, isn't it? Anne is magic. But then again, very little magic is needed when the original is pretty much close to perfection. ;p

  • Reply pao August 25, 2015 at 8:46 am

ooo, so sweet with the cherry, I mean hat, on top. As always, your dress fits you to perfection and still looks comfy at the same time. Congrats on being SpyGirled too. I'm on the prowl for a jumpsuit style as well. But you know mine is going to be baggy as h*#!.

Darling dress. Perfect hair for showing off the perfect hat. Perfect hat for showing off the cutest, perfect hair. Just darling all over!

  • Reply No Fear of Fashion August 25, 2015 at 12:12 pm

I am glad your husband agrees with me to change the flow of the skirt haha. As you know, I love this dress. It is fun and flattering. And I am sorry, but the hat adds cuteness. If you want to steer away from that you need to look at my blog. No cuteness there LOL. Being Spy girled three times…. my my you lucky girl. Anne really loves you. And didn't we all??? We did, yes we did. You must have felt it during the meet-up.
I clicked through to Anne's cherry pick-up… like Patti says: pang goes your heart and you want to be back.

  • Reply Heather Gibson August 25, 2015 at 12:26 pm

It's gorgeous on you Sue! Looks like a perfect summer staple and I am loving the hat too!

  • Reply Shawna McComber August 25, 2015 at 2:16 pm

You sure do look like Mary Engelbreit just created you. The hat is darling on you and your dress looks really flattering. It also looks really well made, which is so rare these days. Before I put my glasses on I thought it was a patter of bees carrying hamburgers but bowls of cherries make much more sense. It's a good think I have my glasses! xoxo

[G+ is evil and deleted my first comment composition. I am beginning to hate G+. I also hate our weak bandwidth at work. Grrrrr.]

The fit and flare sans shirring or pleats suits you well! Make more!
As far as the jumpsuit goes, consider what clever Maricel did — make separates (top, pants) in the same print and it will LOOK like a jumpsuit without all the INCONVENIENCES! Plus you can then mix and match instead of the one jumpsuit. Check out her post, it really DOES look like a jumpsuit. http://myclosetcatalogue.com/2015/08/25/ootd-of-making-first-impressions-and-a-new-approach/

My ears are burning from all the complements from your readers! I really enjoy SpyGirling my fellow bloggers and am not sure why I went on such a long hiatus. I think it's the backlog of uncolored sketches overwhelming me. Onward!

Oh yeah, PUREBREAD. Mmmmmmmm. Fondly remembering the orange cake with the 1″ high frosting. Mmmmmmmm.

Sewers need summer holidays too! Although I highly doubt you are lazing around a pool with a tall drink this summer. Farms require a lot of attention in summer!

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas August 26, 2015 at 10:49 am

Yes! Perfecto is perfecto! I reach for this dress the most. I am using a Vogue pattern that I made back in the early eighties! It will be fun!!

Thanks Pao. Yes, yours is going to be baggy. Mine has a drawstring waistline, so it will have some ease as well. Dressew this Friday and fingers crossed I find what I'm searching for!

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas August 26, 2015 at 10:54 am

Aw…thank you anon. I get serious hat head after wearing hats, LOL. Once the hat goes on, it pretty much has to stay on.

OH YES! Greetje dear! I forgot to mention that you also have encouraged me to explore other silhouettes!!! Thank you! I surprised myself in liking this more fluid silhouette. It's prompted me to just try other looks. It's only fabric after all.

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas August 26, 2015 at 10:56 am

What a compliment Shawna! I'd love to have been created by Mary, LOL. And live in her magical little world.

And you know what? You are not the first person to *see* hamburgers. I've had hamburgers, cake, and ice cream bowls so far.

Ugh! I never did go with Google +. I wonder if that's why you lost your words?

I saw Maricel's awesome *jumpsuit* and the wheels started turning. It really does make so much sense. The only thing is that I have an Etsy purchase on a pattern I owned back in the eighties and I wanted to give it another go! Maybe I should add one of those kiddie jammie flaps…KIDDING!
